Confinement and divertor studies in Alcator C - Mod

چکیده
Early results from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak indicate that ohmic energy confinement does not obey the Neo-Alcator scaling. Instead 'Ohmic L-mode' confinement, close to ITER89-P, is obtained, which substantially exceeds Neo-Alcator under some circumstances. ICRF-heated plasmas follow the same scaling. H-modes are observed both in ohmic and ICRF heated plasmas, with confinement enhancements of about 2 for ELM-free conditions. Divertor operation into the closed chamber shows different regimes, depending on the density. Of particular interest is the progressive pressure detachment at moderate to high densities. Power to the divertor plates is generally low, reflecting the influence of strong radiation in the divertor. The scaling of parameters from Alcator's growing edge database is briefly summarized.

ICRF and Enhanced Confinement Modes in Alcator C-Mod
Introduction Understanding divertor detachment is essential to predicting the operation of future diverted tokamaks. The current plan for ITER operation assumes that the plasma is detached from the divertor, that f e be near the Greenwald limit [1] and that the main plasma is not diluted by impurities. However, we do not know whether these conditions can be achieved simultaneously. In this set ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Baffling on Divertor Leakage in Alcator C-Mod
Abstract The effect of divertor baffling on Alcator C-Mod has been investigated using a novel divertor bypass. The bypass allows in situ variations in the leakage conductance between the divertor plenum and the main chamber. The experimental results, supported by simple modeling, suggest that C-Mod operates in a regime where the leakage flux is independent of the leakage conductance. The relati...
متن کاملImpurity compression and enrichment studies on Alcator C-Mod
Impurity transport has been investigated in the reactor-like conditions of the Alcator C-Mod divertor (divertor plasma density ≥1021 m-3, parallel heat flux in the SOL ≤0.5 GW-m-2). Trace amounts of the recycling impurity gases helium, neon, argon, and krypton were injected into plasmas. A residual gas analyzer that samples the private flux region of the divertor was used for divertor impurity ...
متن کاملDissipative Divertor Operation in the Alcator C-mod Tokamak Dissipative Divertor Operation in the Alcator C-mod Tokamak
The achievement of large volumetric power losses (dissipation) in the Alcator C-Mod divertor region is demonstrated in two operational modes: radiative divertor and detached divertor. During radiative divertor operation, the fraction of SOL power lost by radiation is P R/PSOL0.8 with single null plasmas, n e < 2x10 20 m-3 and I < 1 MA. These plasmas sometimes have very high recycling, with nedi...
متن کاملNeutral Particle Dynamics in the Alcator
This thesis presents an experimental study of neutral particle dynamics in Alcator C-Mod a high powerand particle-density tokamak with an advanced poloidal divertor. The primary diagnostic used in the study is a set of six neutral pressure gauges, including special-purpose gauges built for in situ tokamak operation. While a low main chamber neutral pressure coincides with high plasma confinemen...
